Spencer Presentation Gallery
Alun Williams was born in Manchester, England.  He has exhibited his work extensively overseas in France and London, as well as throughout the U.S. and Canada.  The work in this solo exhibit Distinguishing Marks is a reinvention of history painting, inspired by historical characters as its subject, and by the history of painting as its vehicle.  With considerable humor, the artist calls upon Raphael, Goya, Ingres, Picasso, Miro, Magritte, etc., linking his appropriation of accidental paint-marks found in the street, with representations of historical characters gathered from the history of painting.

This exhibit is organized by the American Folk Art Museum, New York.  The tour of this exhibition is supported in part by the Leir Charitable Foundations in memory of Henry J. & Erna D. Leir, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and with public funds from the New York State Council of the Arts, a state agency.
