Event Description
Laylah Ali: Note Drawings
Thursday, August 30 – Friday, October 12
Spencer Presentation Gallery
Laylah Ali lives in Williamstown where she is a professor at Williams College. While language has always been important she has just recently incorporated it in her drawings. Her notes include random thoughts, overheard conversations, and snippets from newspapers and radio; these textual vignettes are poetic in their rhythm and syntax. Ambiguous characters dressed in masks, wigs, and costumes confuse rather than clarify sexual and racial identities. Exactly what her characters are doing, or why, is never made clear. Ms. Ali’s work is included in collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Center, Institute of Contemporary Art, and DeCordova Museum; and was included in the prestigious 2003 Venice Biennale and the 2004 Whitney Biennial. She was a featured artist in the PBS series Art: 21—Art in the Twenty-First Century.
This program is made possible with support from the Bruce T. Halle Family Foundation. |
